Most photographers and makeup artists (ones I’ve met anyway) will encourage makeup when going in front of the camera. I understand why…but in my studio, it is not mandatory.
It is true that the lights and the lens of a camera can diminish makeup, often making it look like there is no makeup on at all. This obviously depends on how much makeup you apply in the first place, hence why makeup artists apply a little more than usual for the camera.
Having said this…it is still your choice whether you wear makeup for your boudoir shoot or not. There is no right or wrong answer because this is your experience, and they are your photos.
What is going to make you feel the most comfortable?
What is going to help you to feel beautiful?
What is going to give you the full experience…in your eyes?
Some of my clients wear heavy makeup and bold eyes…most wear a little more than usual…and occasionally, my clients go ‘au natural’. No matter what makeup look they choose…they look beautiful…they feel beautiful…and that is what matters!
In the summer of 2020, I studied makeup artistry and became certified. My motivation behind this was so I could best serve my clients and give them the look they want and to avoid them looking in the mirror with wide eyes and saying, “that doesn’t look like me!”. I want my clients to be 100% happy with their entire experience…from hair and makeup all the way through to their final photos. I want my clients to be 100% themselves!
I can relate to my lovelies who don’t wear makeup. Once upon a time that was me too. I grew up with no direction or interest in it. I didn’t start wearing makeup until I was well into my twenties. Now I treat makeup like an accessory to finish off an outfit. Sometimes I get colourful and creative…sometimes I wear none. Both are my choices…and both looks represent me in that moment.
Makeup doesn’t have to be over the top or simple…it can be whatever you want. As long as you are being true to you…it’s the right choice!
